Concussions in the Sports World

SB Nation reports that hockey player Paul Kariya announced retirement after experiencing too many concussions.

Hockey star Paul Kariya’s recent decision to retire early was sad news to many of his fans who have followed him throughout the years. However, having experienced several concussions throughout his career, the athlete fears he will likely experience another brain injury. His most recent injury caused him to sit out the entire last season.

With fights breaking out left and right, it is no secret that hockey is a rough sport. And, Kariya doesn’t think the NHL is taking the proper precautions to prevent concussions. In an interview, he explained the player that caused his most recent head injury was not even punished.  He fears that, in the future,  a player may even die on the ice. Kariya thinks, in order for things to change, the NHL should begin fining owners and suspending coaches.

We can’t blame Kariya for taking an early retirement. Too many concussions can lead to negative repercussions like memory loss and, in more serious cases, dementia. This isn’t something to be taken lightly, and doctors advise athletes who have experienced numerous concussions not to return to the sport.

How do you think different sport leagues can improve their policies to prevent concussions?

Check out this video of Kariya on the ice.
